Melkan Gursel joined Turk­ish ar­chi­tec­ture firm Tabanlioglu Ar­chi­tects in 1995, and has since co-led the firm with Murat Tabanlioglu. A grad­u­ate of Is­tan­bul Tech­ni­cal Univer­sity and Polytech­nic Univer­sity of Metropoli­tan Cat­alo­nia for her Master of Ar­chi­tec­ture, Gursel’s in­flu­ence on the firm is felt in the high­stan­dard of ar­chi­tec­tural de­sign as well as the ris­ing per­cent­age of fe­male ar­chi­tects at the firm, which now sits at al­most 60 per­cent. She has lec­tured at var­i­ous na­tional and in­ter­na­tional plat­forms and serves as a jury mem­ber on sev­eral pro­grammes – one of her con­tri­bu­tions be­ing RIBA An­nie Spink Award for Ex­cel­lence in Ar­chi­tec­tural Ed­u­ca­tion. Gursel has also been se­lected as one of the “Europe 40 un­der 40” in 2008 and “Fifty un­der Fifty: In­no­va­tors of the 21st Cen­tury” in 2015. And in 2018, she jointly won MEA Awards’ Ar­chi­tect of the Year with part­ner Murat Tabanlioglu.
