Everything you need to know about Aramco’s unconventional gas development project.

Saudi Aramco has revealed plans to develop its domestic shale gas reserves as an alternative to current gas resources. Surveys have revealed that due to increasing domestic demand for fuel, shale gas production would be necessary by 2020.

Shale gas comprises of methane, ethane and natural gas liquids (NGL), and costs approximately $5 to $6 for one million BTUS. Saudi Aramco is fast-tracking the development of its shale gas resources by about seven years as the Kingdom’s demand for gas continues to grow. Aramco is pushing ahead with its plans to produce shale gas in three different locations.

The locations are:

• The Empty Quarter

• South Ghawar in the Eastern Province

• Jafurah in the northern desert region

Studies carried out since 2011 were successful and were completed in July 2013. However, the exact scope of work will not be known until the full FEED is completed. The basic scope of work is as follows:

Exploration Phase:

• Geological and geophysical assessments • Seismic surveys

• Drilling of exploratory wells

• Drilling of assessment wells

• Associated facilities

Development Phase:

• Wellhead platforms

• Jackets

• Flare

• Gas treatment facilities and accompanying offsites and utilities • Interconnecting pipelines

• Associated facilities
