Orpic: Expanding Polymer Horizons Globally
Orpic, through its polymer division is endeavouring to double the company’s profit, create new business opportunities, generate significant employment, and support the development of a downstream plastic industry in Oman
Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) is one of the largest organisations in the Sultanate of Oman and one among the most rapidly growing businesses in the Middle East downstream oil and gas industry.
The company’s refineries in Sohar and Muscat, as well as the integrated aromatics and polypropylene plants in Sohar, provide fuel, chemicals, plastics, and other petroleum products, to the Sultanate and to the world.
With an annual revenue exceeding $10bn, Orpic is a multicultural organisation with a total work force of around 2,800 people from 40 countries. Its vision is to become a globally competitive downstream business that Oman is proud of.
Polymer Marketing Division
As one of the key steps towards achieving its vision, Orpic established the Polymer Marketing Division in 2017 to competitively offer innovative and differentiated polypropylene and polyethylene products and solutions to the global markets.
Headquartered in Muscat, Orpic provides its customers with world-class sales, marketing technical and supply chain support through its Polymer Marketing Division, based on the best business practices.
To be closer to the customers and setting up its presence in strategic markets, the division has recently established offices in Singapore and China, and new offices are scheduled to open in Turkey in the near future. Orpic’s target markets are the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Asia, and Southeast Asia.
The Polymer Marketing Division endeavours to strengthen Orpic’s position locally and globally, and supports the development of plastic manufacturing and conversion industries around the world. The division competitively offers innovative, differentiated polypropylene products and solutions to customers worldwide.
“Orpic wants to demonstrate our commitment to win customer preference and present our polyethylene and polypropylene solutions to the world, which are driven by Orpic’s vision to be a globally competitive, downstream business that Oman is proud of,” said Gilles Rochas, general manager, polymer marketing, Orpic.
With its Polymer Marketing Division, Orpic is further expanding its global footprint to more than 100 countries. The goal is to enter new markets and increase the number of customers to more than 3,000 by selecting optimum channels to market.
Current and future solutions
By 2020, following the completion of the Liwa Plastics Industries Complex (LPIC) project, the production capacity at Orpic’s Sohar facility will triple to 1.5 million tonnes, comprising 440kt LLDPE, 440kt HDPE and 640kt PP.
The project is set to improve Orpic’s product mix and business model, double its profit and support the development of a downstream plastics industry in Oman.
Taking advantage of the growing global market for plastics, Orpic will create new business opportunities and employment in Oman, and firmly reinforce the company as a significant player in the international petrochemicals marketplace as it will bring new business development opportunities for the Sultanate in the fast-growing plastics industry.
With a total investment of $6.7bn, LPIC is expected to boost Orpic’s contribution to develop the in-country value (ICV) for the national economy. With the global market for plastics growing, the Liwa Plastics Industries Complex will firmly reinforce Orpic as a recognised player in the international petrochemicals marketplace – enabling Oman, for the first time, to produce polyethylene, the form of plastic that rates highest in terms of global demand, and increase the current production of polypropylene.
The innovative technologies used in the facility will empower Orpic to introduce new products such as polypropylene homopolymer, random and block copolymers, HDPE and LLDPE, targeting the automotive, construction, infrastructure, advance packaging and healthcare sectors.
Orpic strives to deliver innovative and new products and solutions to its customers. For example, Orpic’s thin-walled packaging solutions allow the consumers to use less plastic in their packaging. Another example is Orpic’s smart packaging, with which the customers can easily identity when a product inside the packaging has gone bad.
In May 2018, Orpic has launched a new thermoforming grade called Luban HP1151K that will increase both productivity and the overall performance of transparent thermoformed cups, trays and containers. The new polypropylene (PP) thermoforming grade is based on Milliken’s nucleating innovation Hyperform HPN-600EI. Luban HP1151K combines high clarity and aesthetics with a new level of superior dimensional stability for thermoformed products. It is based on the latest technology available to offer the food packaging and household storage solutions industries a new benchmark in pure, high-quality polypropylene.
Orpic will create new business opportunities and employment in Oman, and firmly reinforce Orpic as a significant player in the international petrochemicals marketplace as it will bring new business development opportunities for the Sultanate in the fast-growing plastics industry.
Sustainable use of plastics
Orpic’s recent campaign with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs to launch reusable bags, instead of single-use plastic bags, will help promote a sustainable lifestyle in the Sultanate of Oman.
This campaign aims to bring together public and private sectors to promote a sustainable lifestyle in Oman by focusing on several key themes that are in line with the government’s vision to safeguard natural resources, biodiversity and habitats.
The campaign also aims to promote a circular economy and encourage innovation, using recycled materials to produce valued-added products, which will support a sustainable growth for Orpic’s business endeavours.
Orpic’s new thermoforming grade polypropylene – Luban HP1151K – is suitable for food applications.
Orpic’s product solutions include flexible packaging, rigid packaging, fibres and filaments.
