IN THE MIDDLE EAST, 43.5% OF ICS COMPUTERS WERE ATTACKED BY MALWARE IN H1-2018, SAYS KASPERSKY LAB CYBERSECURITY EXPERT

The speakers at the conference presented the latest developments in the sphere of embedded technology as well as spoke about diverse cyberphysical threats and how to protect against them.

“We innovate because we are human. We cannot stop. It is what we do,” commented Patrick Miller, managing partner, Archer International, USA, in one of the presentations during the conference.

“Implementing connected systems and devices is a top priority for industrial organisations in 2018-2019. But 54% of companies see connectivity and the integration of IOT ecosystems as a major cybersecurity issue,” said Georgy Shebuldaev, head of Kaspersky Industrial Cybersecurity Business Development.

“Industrial organisations are investing in security for their IT networks, but they are not putting the right cybersecurity practices in place to protect their operational networks. While 77% have implemented response measures in the case of incidents affecting corporate IT, 52% have dedicated response measures in place to deal with OT/ICS cybersecurity incidents,” added Shebuldaev.

“Bad experience in the past discourage new approaches to ICS (industrial control system) cybersecurity. In the energy sector, 61% see the main cybersecurity management challenge as hiring employees with the relevant skills. Although in 53% of industrial companies, top management personnel are involved in ICS protection issues, 66% do not have a dedicated budget for securing critical infrastructure,” claimed Shebuldaev.

“According to Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) statistics, 41.21% of ICS computers were attacked worldwide in H12018 by malware, compared to 37.75% in H2-2017. In the Middle East, 43.5% of ICS computers were attacked by malware in H12018. While 42.3% of ICS computers in the UAE were attacked by malware, the figure for Saudi Arabia stood at 55%,” revealed Evgeny Goncharov, head of Kaspersky Lab ICS CERT.

While 6% of worldwide ICS computer attacks in H1-2018 were by crypto-miners, 1.6% attacks were by ransomware.
