The north-western corner of the People’s Republic of China, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is home to the Taklamakan Desert and 55 officially recognised ethnic minorities, including the Muslim Uyghurs. The product of 10 year’s of exploration, Lisa Ross’s solo exhibition, Living Shrines, documents the Uyghur’s sacred sites, or mazars, that are built to honour Sufi saints, but which are also home to devotional offerings and personal prayers. Living Shrines is at Gulf Photo Plus from today until September 2, and on June 7, Ross will be in Dubai to speak about her work. Visit www.gulfphotoplus.com for more details.
