Expatriates of a certain vintage might remember a song Back in Dubai. Sung by Mombassa-born Sal Davis who played the hotel circuit here, it became a radio hit locally in the 1980s. “Back in Dubai. There’s a sun and it shines there, all of the time,” Davis croons.

The song provided the soundtrack to a promotional video for the event taking place in the above photograph. It’s November 16, 1986, and Dubai is hosting the 27th Chess Olympiad at the World Trade Centre. More than 100 teams participated, including a UAE team.

Here in the centre, we see reigning world champion Garry Kasparov of the USSR team making a move against a player out of shot, while sitting on his left is fellow team member Artur Yusupov. The Soviets won that tournament and the promotional video is still available on YouTube.
