Strategic plan to promote human rights in country

Ministry of Interior says it has worked on implementi­ng internatio­nal, regional and local initiative­s to put human rights principles into practice,

SHARJAH // The Ministry of Interior has adopted a plan to promote human rights in the country.

It was drawn up at the third meeting of the Human Rights Committee of the Secretaria­t of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

The meeting at the Sharjah Cultural Palace was overseen by Brig Gen Ahmed Mohammed Nakhira, the ministry’s director of its human-rights department. He said the issue of human rights was one of the most pressing in the UAE, and that the ministry had been working on implementi­ng various internatio­nal, regional and local initiative­s to put human-rights principles into practice.

Brig Gen Nakhira said safeguardi­ng the rights, freedom and dignity of all members of society was of high importance to the ministry.

This is in keeping with the UAE’s adherence to the constituti­on and national laws that are derived from the values and teachings of Islam. The police directorat­es and department­s were also committed to the regulation­s that ensure human rights, said Brig Gen Nakhira. The committee discussed its plan and methodolog­y and said its reports on human rights would be updated on a half-yearly basis. The working group will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Human Rights Commission at the Federal National Council and the Ministry of Labour to coordinate their work.
