Abu Dhabi Police send officers to aid US investigation
ABU DHABI // The body of the Emirati student who was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio on Sunday was due to arrive in Abu Dhabi last night.
Saif Nasser Al Ameri’s funeral will be held today. He will be buried in Bani Yas cemetery after funeral prayers at Al Rawashid Mosque after Friday prayers.
Al Ameri’s body was released by the Summit County medical examiner on Tuesday night after a post- mortem examination revealed the cause of the 26-year-old’s death to be a gunshot wound to the head and that the death was a homicide.
The officer involved in Al Ameri’s death was treated for minor injuries and is on paid leave pending the results of an investigation.
UAE Embassy officials represented Al Ameri’s family during meetings held with the Ohio bureau of criminal investigation on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it was reported by Sharjah TV that a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department at Abu Dhabi Police have been sent to Ohio to help US authorities investigate the circumstances of Al Ameri’s death.
The officers were sent in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The ministry said it was still closely following investigations by the police in Ohio in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Washington, and that an official and more comprehensive statement would be issued as soon as it had more details from US authorities.
