Usain Bolt says ‘there’s a lot of work to do’ after winning at Diamond League meeting

-

Usain Bolt ducked under 10 seconds for the first time this year to win his final race outside of a major championships before retirement, but said he still had things to work on.

The Jamaican world and Olympic 100 metres and 200m champion recovered from a slow start to roar clear of the 100m field at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco on Friday night, clocking in at 9.95 seconds to beat Isiah Young of the United States by .03 of a second.

Bolt, who this week said he has been having treatment for a back problem, will defend a global sprint title for the last time at the World Championships in London next month.

“It was good. I’m going into right direction, but there’s still lot of work to do,” Bolt, 30, said on the meet’s website. “Sub 10 seconds is always good.”

Of the other notable athletes in action, Emmanuel Korir of Kenya finished ahead of Brandon McBride of Canada in the 800m, and Elijah Motonei Manangoi led a Kenya sweep of the 1,500m.

Marie-Josee Ta Lou took first in the women’s 200m followed by Kyra Jefferson of the US and Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith.

Kenyans ran one-two in the women’s 3,000m with Hellen Obiri and Beatrice Chepkoech followed home by Laura Muir of Great Britain in third and fellow Scot Eilish McColgan fourth in a career-best time over the distance.

Kori Carter of the US took gold in the women’s 400m hurdles.
