Sheikh Mohammed honours nine ‘extraordinary’ people

Nine people have been honoured for their work in building and supporting the development of the capital in this year’s Abu Dhabi Awards.
In a ceremony at the Sea Palace Barza yesterday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, congratulated those awarded for “inspiring selfless generosity and kindness”.
“We meet here today to not only celebrate the achievements of these selfless individuals but also to inspire the nation to continue on this humanitarian path,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
“It is with immense pleasure that I once again congratulate these truly extraordinary individuals, who have lifted our spirits and strengthened the spirit of our national union as set out by the Founding Father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed.
“With their ambitious vision, optimism, love for people and abiding patriotism, these individuals have not only garnered the respect of the nation, but also of those they have touched through their kindness and compassion.
“I am sure these individuals will continue to build on Sheikh Zayed’s vision and legacy as we strive to create a world of coexistence and peace.”
The recipients of the Abu Dhabi Awards 2018 included Sheikh Mubarak Al Mansoori, who documented the late Sheikh Zayed’s traditions and values, and Farah Al Qaissieh, who founded an initiative for stutterers.
Dr George Mathew was honoured for his contribution to healthcare services over the past five decades, Ibrahim Al Abed for his contribution to UAE media and its development, and Dr Jayanti Maitra for helping to document UAE history.
Then there was Ali Al Ahbabi for his role in building an educated society, Fatima Al Kaabi for her innovations, and Theban Al Mheiri for achievements in sports for special needs.
The late Dr Azzam Al Zoebie, was recognised for advancing awareness of blood diseases. Dr Lama Al Zoebie, his daughter, received his award.
As the emirate’s highest civilian honour, the Abu Dhabi Awards were established in 2005 by the President, Sheikh Khalifa, to preserve the late Sheikh Zayed’s legacy.
