A family has thanked Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, for towing their car of out the sand after they became stranded in the desert.

Hanna Karen Arroyo said Sheikh Mohammed stopped in his Mercedes G-Wagen and gave them a hand yesterday.

“My friend and I got stuck on the desert of Dubai and we got rescued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid,” she wrote on Twitter.

She shared pictures of a young Emirati attaching a tether between the Ruler’s car and her Honda Pilot 4x4.

The car appeared to have its front wheels partially stuck in sand just off a two-lane road.

Ms Arroyo and two friends are pictured with a smiling Sheikh Mohammed afterwards.

Rescuing those in need has become something of a tradition for the Royal Family. Last year, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, helped a lorry driver who was stranded in the desert.

Sheikh Hamdan joined a string of vehicles to help move the lorry out of a rut with his SUV.

Earlier yesterday, Sheikh Mohammed attended the Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Festival at Dubai International Endurance City.

Under the supervision of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, the 120-kilometre Dubai Crown Prince Endurance Cup attracted local and international competitors.

Attending the race with Sheikh Mohammed was Sheikh Hamdan, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid, Dubai Deputy Ruler and Minister of Finance, and Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed.

Riding the winning horse Dhahi, Saeed Al Khiyari clinched the hotly contested title in 4 hours and 20 minutes.
