The world’s tallest statue is due to be unveiled today after nearly five years of construction. The Statue of Unity is 182 metres tall – twice that of the Statue of Liberty and 30 metres taller than the current record holder, the Spring Temple Buddha in China.

Statue of Unity is a likeness of India’s first home minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and is to be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on what would have been Patel’s birthday. Created by sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the statue is on Sadhu Island, near Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat state. It was erected at a reported – and controversial – cost of Dh1.5 billion. This week, local communities warned Mr Modi to stay away from the inauguration, claiming the statue had destroyed the area’s natural resources.
