For 119 years, the Rub­jerg Knude light­house de­fied the worst of weather the North Sea could throw at it on Den­mark’s Jut­land coast as it shone out its warn­ing to mariners but, even­tu­ally, it was un­der­mined by the waves pound­ing the sandy cliffs it stood on. The sea had got to within six me­tres of the 120-year-old struc­ture be­fore Dan­ish au­thor­i­ties de­cided to jack it up on to rail tracks to pull it about 80 me­tres back from the fast-erod­ing cliff-edge
