Di­a­mond stolen from Ja­pan jew­ellery fair

Ja­panese po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the theft of a 200 mil­lion yen (Dh6.75m) di­a­mond from an in­ter­na­tional jew­ellery ex­hi­bi­tion near Tokyo. The 50-carat di­a­mond was last seen on dis­play in­side a glass show­case at 5pm on Thurs­day. An hour later, just af­ter clos­ing time, the di­a­mond was gone and the jew­ellery case un­locked. Po­lice yes­ter­day said they sus­pect the theft took place some­time in the fi­nal hour of the ex­hi­bi­tion in Yoko­hama, near Tokyo. In­ves­ti­ga­tors are check­ing se­cu­rity cam­era footage that showed a man reach­ing to­wards a show­case dur­ing the sus­pected time of theft. About 410 jewellers from around the world gathered for the three-day ex­hi­bi­tion that ended on Fri­day.
