King grabs winner as United woes continue

Manchester United’s struggles in front of goal returned yesterday afternoon after Bournemouth secured a 1-0 win at the Vitality Stadium.

Joshua King’s finish just before half time proved the difference between the two sides, and while United pressed forward in search of an equaliser they were unable to regularly trouble Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

After last weekend’s 3-1 win at Norwich City and getting past Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup in midweek, United looked to be turning a corner.

However, the team’s goalscoring problems returned to haunt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who have now lost four of their opening 11 league matches and have slipped to tenth in the table.

“We are disappointed but when you come to places like this you have to take control of the game,” Solskjaer said. “We did not and we could not get the goal. We were missing some quality at times. Maybe I should have started some others.” Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves, a result that means the Gunners have taken five points from the last four games.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had given Arsenal, who had mesut Ozil in their starting line-up, a first-half lead with his eight league goal of the season. But Portuguese striker Raul Jimenez headed a 76th minute equaliser for Wolves.

Sheffield United are now up to sixth after a 3-0 win over Burnley at Bramall Lane thanks to John Lundstram’s double and a first of the season for John Fleck.

Brighton defeated struggling Norwich 2-0 at the Amex Stadium. Leandro Trossard and Shane Duffy Shane Duffy’s second-half strikes means the Canaries have lost five of their last six games.

At the London Stadium, Newcastle secured their third win of the season with a 3-2 victory over West Ham.

First half goals from Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez put the Magpies in control, before Jonjo Shelvey’s freekick made it three just after half-time. Fabian Balbuena and Robert Snodgrass found the net to make it a nervy finish for Steve Bruce’s side.
