Mysterious explosion kills Italian firefighters

Three firefighters in northern Italy were killed yesterday in an explosion at an abandoned farm building in what police said may be a criminal act. The firefighters were responding to concerns about a gas leak in Quargnento, a town in the northern Piedmont region, police said. As the firefighters attempted to put out a blaze in an abandoned farm building an explosion brought down the entire structure. Authorities found an unexploded gas cylinder, a timer and electrical wire in a nearby building. “All this leads us to believe that the explosion was deliberately set,” local prosecutor Enrico Cieri said. Two other firefighters and a member of Italy’s Carabinieri military police force were injured.
