Drug traf­ficker shoots him­self in stand off

An Amer­i­can man fac­ing the death penalty for drug traf­fick­ing in Thai­land shot his Thai wife and him­self as po­lice closed in af­ter the cou­ple shot and stabbed their way out of a court hold­ing room in the south­ern town of Pat­taya on Mon­day. A po­lice of­fi­cer was wounded as they made their es­cape with the help of an ac­com­plice, flee­ing the court in a pick-up truck. Of­fi­cers tracked the cou­ple down in Sa Kaeo prov­ince on the bor­der with Cam­bo­dia, with the man tak­ing his wife, who is also fac­ing the death penalty, hostage be­fore shoot­ing her and him­self dur­ing a stand off with po­lice. Sat­tawat Hi­ran­bu­rana, as­sis­tant to the na­tional po­lice chief, said the sur­vived, although the man suf­fered “se­ri­ous in­juries”.
