Drug trafficker shoots himself in stand off
An American man facing the death penalty for drug trafficking in Thailand shot his Thai wife and himself as police closed in after the couple shot and stabbed their way out of a court holding room in the southern town of Pattaya on Monday. A police officer was wounded as they made their escape with the help of an accomplice, fleeing the court in a pick-up truck. Officers tracked the couple down in Sa Kaeo province on the border with Cambodia, with the man taking his wife, who is also facing the death penalty, hostage before shooting her and himself during a stand off with police. Sattawat Hiranburana, assistant to the national police chief, said the survived, although the man suffered “serious injuries”.
