Senator claims Bolivia’s vacant presidency
A senator proclaimed herself Bolivia’s acting president on Tuesday to fill the power vacuum left by the abrupt resignation of Evo Morales, who condemned the move as a “sneaky coup.” Legislators had been summoned to formalise the resignation and confirm deputy Senate speaker Jeanine Anez as interim president. Instead, Ms Anez declared herself caretaker leader when the session failed to reach a quorum after many politicians stayed away amid blockades and protests by supporters of Mr Morales. The Constitutional Court endorsed Ms Anez’s appointment. “We want to call elections as soon as possible,” Ms Anez told Congress, where only opponents of Mr Morales were present.
