Top Al Shabab terrorist dies in US drone strike
A Somali intelligence official said a senior figure in the Al Shabab terrorist group died in a US drone strike. The official said the unidentified militant had maintained links with foreign extremist groups with the aim of co-ordinating future attacks. Residents said the figure’s vehicle was struck on Tuesday outside the Al Shabab-held town of Kunya Barow, in southern Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region. The US military confirmed the strike and said the Al Shabab member had direct ties to Al Qaeda. Washington said the strike was carried out in co-ordination with Somalia’s government. A UN report this month said Al Shabab is a potent threat and now makes its own explosives.
