Aung San Suu Kyi to lead Myanmar defence
Myanmar’s military and its civilian government are behind Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s decision to defend her country against allegations of genocide at the UN’s top court, an army spokesman said on Thursday. In a shock move, Ms Suu Kyi’s office announced on Wednesday that she would travel to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to lead the defence team. Gambia will open its case at the ICJ in December on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation. The mainly Muslim nation accuses Myanmar of breaching the 1948 Genocide Convention through its military crackdown in 2017 against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.
