Aung San Suu Kyi to lead Myan­mar de­fence

Myan­mar’s mil­i­tary and its civil­ian gov­ern­ment are be­hind No­bel lau­re­ate Aung San Suu Kyi’s de­ci­sion to de­fend her coun­try against al­le­ga­tions of geno­cide at the UN’s top court, an army spokesman said on Thurs­day. In a shock move, Ms Suu Kyi’s of­fice an­nounced on Wed­nes­day that she would travel to the In­ter­na­tional Court of Jus­tice in The Hague to lead the de­fence team. Gam­bia will open its case at the ICJ in De­cem­ber on be­half of the Or­gan­i­sa­tion of Is­lamic Co-op­er­a­tion. The mainly Mus­lim na­tion ac­cuses Myan­mar of breach­ing the 1948 Geno­cide Con­ven­tion through its mil­i­tary crack­down in 2017 against Rohingya Mus­lims in Rakhine state.
