Nadal seals emo­tional Davis Cup win for Spain

Rafael Nadal guided Spain to an emo­tional vic­tory over Canada in the re-vamped Davis Cup in front of a jubilant Madrid crowd. His 6-3, 7-6 win against De­nis Shapo­valov sealed the ti­tle, af­ter beat­ing 19-yearold Felix Auger-Alias­sime 7-6, 6-3 in the opener. Nadal’s win gave Spain an unas­sail­able 2-0 lead and a sixth Davis Cup ti­tle. He said: “I could not be hap­pier. It has been an un­for­get­table mo­ment in this amaz­ing sta­dium; we can’t thank the crowd enough. Our team spirit pre­vails.” Nadal’s team­mate Roberto Bautista Agut sent Spain on its way to vic­tory by win­ning the first sin­gles match on Sun­day, three days af­ter the death of his fa­ther. Nadal said: “For me, what he did was some­thing al­most [su­per] hu­man. I don’t know how to ex­plain it. It will be an ex­am­ple for the rest of my life ... It was some­thing in­cred­i­ble.”
