Cyprus takes action to stem illegal migration
Cyprus will impose additional controls on crossings at nine checkpoints along a UNcontrolled buffer zone on the divided island. In a bid to stem illegal migration, Cyprus’s Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Wednesday that any third-country citizens who enter Cyprus through its breakaway northern third will not be permitted to enter the internationally recognised southern part. Only Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, European Union citizens and asylum seekers will be exempt. Mr Petrides said police and the Cypriot National Guard have been told to step up patrols along the buffer zone. EU member Cyprus says it is struggling to cope with a recent migrant influx.
