Mourinho hails striker for 150 Premier League goals

Harry Kane struck his 150th Premier League goal two minutes from time to seal Tottenham’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Kane headed home his landmark effort to send Spurs to the top of the table for the first time since August 2014 as they continued their 100 per cent away record this season. The rise lasted only couple of hours as Jamie Vardy put Leicester City on top after also securing a 1-0 win, at home to Wolves.

It was his 201st goal for Spurs and his 13th of the campaign. Kane’s header from Matt Doherty’s cross settled a tight game at the Hawthorns, where Spurs struggled to dominate the game despite an all-out attack.

West Brom could argue that they deserved a point, but were made to pay for a late defensive slip-up as the wait for their first win back in the Premier League goes on.

Spur manager Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Kane after the match: “This guy does much more than scoring goals. For example, last five minutes he was playing as a No 6 and winning balls in front of the defence. Special.

“Harry Kane you have to say has this many goals, this many assists, this number of balls recovered, this number o f duels won. This number of balls that he saved his team in defensive set-pieces. This is Harry Kane. It’s goals plus this and this and this and that.”

With Kane, Gareth Bale and Son Heung-min starting in attack for the first time, Tottenham would have been hoping to have the firepower to dominate their hosts.

But it was a game of few chances that seemed destined to end goalless after Hugo Lloris had kept out Karlan Grant’s second-half header.

The decisive moment arrived when West Bro m’s defence failed to track Kane’s run into the box, allowing him to leap unchecked to meet Doherty’s ball into the box and head the ball over goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

This was nothing like the Spurs side that had scored 12 goals in their previous three Premier League away games but Mourinho was pleased that his team had managed to find a way to grind out a victory.

“I feel satisfaction because we won and have 17 points and have 12 in 12 possible away from home,” he said. “That compensates the dropped points at home, and for this reason I am happy.”

The Baggies remain in the relegation zone having secured just three points from their opening eight games.
