UN condemns Thailand for deporting refugees
The UN refugee agency has condemned Thailand for deporting three Cambodian refugees in two weeks, after a former politician who was sent back to Phnom Penh was jailed. Thavry Lanh fled to Thailand more than four years ago after representing the now dissolved Cambodian opposition party and was a vocal critic of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government. Thai immigration officers arrested her on Friday and she was sent to Cambodia the next day. Gillian Triggs, a senior official with the UNHCR, said the move contravened the principle of non-refoulement, under which countries are banned from deporting people to places where their lives or freedom are in danger.
