Solomon Islands places capital under curfew
A curfew was announced in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara yesterday after protesters tried to storm Parliament in an apparent attempt to topple Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. Demonstrators set fire to buildings, including a police station and a hut near the parliament building, a police spokesman said. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. “The important thing is police now have control of the situation and no one is out on the streets,” the spokesman said. Video of the incident showed police and protesters facing off along a street and columns of smoke rising from buildings. Images on social media also showed people looting shops.
