Former nanny faces extradition to Chile
A former nanny living in Australia has lost her second appeal against extradition to Chile, where she is accused of serving as a member of the secret police under the regime of former president Augusto Pinochet. Adriana Rivas faces seven counts of aggravated kidnapping related to the disappearance, and presumed murder, of members of Chile’s Communist Party, including its leader, Victor Diaz, who disappeared in 1976. She has been fighting extradition since being arrested by Australian authorities in February 2019. In June, Rivas, 68, lost her first Federal Court appeal against a lower court’s ruling that she was eligible for extradition. The federal court has now upheld that ruling.
