Haitian families flee gun battles in capital
Haitians in the capital Portau-Prince fled their homes on Monday as gun battles broke out between rival gangs. The latest violence comes after at least 20 people were killed in clashes between armed groups last week. Gunfire rang out in the poor neighbourhood of Cite Soleil, where dozens of panicked residents left homes and were running in all directions, a witness told Reuters. Some walked with their hands in the air to show they were not armed to avoid being attacked. Armed men in civilian clothes were also present in the neighbourhood known as La Plaine, near Haiti’s Ministry of Agriculture. The Haitian National Police made no immediate comment.
