Lula makes presidential bid to ‘rebuild Brazil’
Brazil’s former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has launched a campaign for a new presidential term. On Saturday, he vowed to rebuild the country after what he called the “irresponsible and criminal” administration of farright incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. The launch sealed a political comeback for Lula, four years after the leftist, 76, was jailed on corruption charges. “We’re ready to work not only to win the election on October 2, but to rebuild and transform Brazil, which will be even more difficult,” he told supporters at a rally in Sao Paulo. He said Mr Bolsonaro, whom he did not mention by name, had made Brazil a “pariah” with polarising policies, attacks on democratic institutions and destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
