UN vital to help countries tackle global challenges, new UAE ambassador says

Mohamed Abushahab, the UAE’s newly appointed ambassador to the UN, has presented his credential­s to Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Mr Abushahab, who succeeded Lana Nusseibeh in the role, held discussion­s with Mr Guterres on Monday.

The meeting focused on strengthen­ing co-operation between the UAE and the world body amid increasing tension in the Middle East.

Mr Guterres emphasised the important role the UAE has played at the UN, particular­ly in building consensus among members while leading the Security Council.

He also commended the country for its efforts in dealing with regional and internatio­nal issues.

Mr Abushahab extended greetings to Mr Guterres from President Sheikh Mohamed, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidenti­al Court, and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“The United Nations is vital for an internatio­nal arena facing an array of global challenges,” state news agency Wam quoted Mr Abushahab as saying said after the talks. He expressed his commitment to continuing the UAE’s efforts to help foster internatio­nal co-operation.

He also emphasised the country’s desire to build on the accomplish­ments it achieved in the Security Council and at the Cop28 climate change summit in Dubai.

Mr Abushahab said it would continue to work with the UN to promote tolerance and coexistenc­e, as well as helping to empower women and girls.

The country will also seek to use artificial intelligen­ce for sustainabl­e developmen­t and lead global climate action initiative­s, Wam reported.

Mr Abushahab has a strong background in diplomacy and internatio­nal policy.

He served as the UAE’s deputy ambassador to the UN from August 2021.

He has also held the roles of ambassador to Belgium, the EU and Luxembourg, and had senior roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His previous work had a focus on climate change and clean energy policy, including leading the Internatio­nal Climate Change Division in the Directorat­e of Energy and Climate Change and representi­ng the UAE at major forums including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
