L&T– POWERING NATIONS
L&T Construction’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business vertical is a leading global EPC player in India, Africa, ASEAN and the Middle East in the realms of power transmission and distribution, renewables, integrated solutions
With the rapidly rising global demand for energy, countries are increasingly tapping ‘green sources’ to bridge the power gap with smarter and secure solutions to optimize resources and effectively manage power distribution. This calls for strengthening power grids with greater adoption of gas insulated substations and extra high voltage transmission lines which open new vistas of opportunity to develop new infrastructure.
L&T Construction, the construction arm of Larsen & Toubro, the US$ 21 billion, Indian technology, engineering, construction, and manufacturing conglomerate, operates in over 30 countries worldwide. Among the top 15 global contractors, L&T Construction is also India’s largest construction organization offering EPC solutions with single-source responsibility to execute large industrial and infrastructure projects from concept to commissioning.
L&T Construction’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business vertical is a leading global EPC player in India, Africa, ASEAN and the Middle East in the realms of power transmission and distribution, renewables, integrated solutions and end-to-end services ranging from design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of transmission lines, substations, underground cable networks, distribution networks, power quality improvement projects, infrastructure electrification, solar PV plants, battery energy storage systems and mini/micro grid projects.
“We have set benchmarks in capacity, complexity and speed of execution,” shares Mr T Madhavadas, Whole Time Director & Senior
Mr. Madhavadas elaborates that in a period of over three decades, the PT&D business has emerged as one of the major EPC players in the power transmission and distribution space in the Middle East. “Currently, we are executing 85 substations, 1504 km of transmission lines and 908 km of cabling projects having already executed 283 substations, over 4,000 km of transmission lines of various voltages up to 400 kV, 300+ substations and 3,000+ km of cabling projects.”
In the UAE, L&T PT&D has executed several landmark power infrastructure projects for Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) besides executing substations and cabling projects for utilities like Transco, SEWA and AADC. Significant projects under execution include substations and cabling projects involving cable route length of 50+ km across 132 kV, an extra high voltage (EHV) substation of 400 kV and various substation and transmission line projects for SEC, Saudi Aramco, Kahrama and OETC. Other significant stake holders with whom L&T is associated with include PAHW, MEW, KNPC, KOC in Kuwait, Meeras, Nakheel, ADNOC in UAE, Lusail, QP in Qatar.
Experienced in handling niche floating solar PV technology, the business has solar projects of over 2.5 GWp, 150 MWhr energy storage projects with 500+ micro grids and is a single-stop solution for renewable generation, pooling & evacuation substations, and transmission lines in India. L&T Renewables offers flexible solutions from monocrystalline to bifacial PV module technologies, central or string inverters and fixed or tracking solutions to suit extreme desert conditions and is also capable of delivering plug and play containerised battery energy storage solutions. for the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, a 400 kV substation at Chlef, a 220 kV substation at Bougezoul and 220/60 kV substation at Drra Errich in Algeria, 60/22 kV substation, 60 kV aerial line and 60 kV underground cabling at Dakhla in Morocco, Sokhna 500/220 kV GIS in Egypt, 500 kV HVDC transmission line and distribution package in Kenya, 400 kV & 220 kV substations of ADDM&G in Ethiopia, 400 kV substations at Phombeya & Nkhoma and a distribution package at Blantyre in Malawi, 500 km of 400 kV transmission line and a 400 kV substation in Botswana.
In the ASEAN Region, L&T PT&D has established its presence in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Myanmar and is currently executing 13 power infrastructure projects. Some of the significant breakthroughs made include: 275/132/33 kV GIS, the region’s largest, at Samalaju, 500 kV Yong Peng East Substation to Point
A Transmission Line at Johor, 500 kV Tha LiKhon Kaen 4 Transmission Line, Lambir 275/33 kV Substation at Sarawak. The business is now executing a 37 MWh Battery Energy System for the 115 kV substations at Chai Badan and Bamnet Narong in Thailand.
Enhancing L&T’s international presence are a slew of transmission line orders bagged recently in Bangladesh. The scope of these packages involves Design, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of EHV Transmission Lines on a turnkey basis.
Presently, L&T, through its synergy of strengths in transmission, distribution, and renewables, provides total solutions to complex power projects thanks to a unique combination of engineering, design, procurement, and construction expertise.
