IT’S DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE SOMEONE seamlessly transitioning from a dedicated business mindset to a more creative one, but for Edoardo Caovilla, it’s in his blood.
“I had watched my grandfather and father work in the family business, and I hadn’t initially planned to engage as a creative,” Edoardo recollects. “I studied business and expressed myself in other ways for as long as I could. But I knew there would be a time when my family would ask me to stand at the helm of René Caovilla’s creative studio, and when it did, I decided to dedicate myself to learning about the business from the ground up. I spent two years learning the basics without interruption, because the nature of this business requires an in-depth knowledge of the art of shoemaking.”
Applying the same gusto, Edoardo’s focus is now on moving the brand’s legacy forward, both in terms of enhancing its aesthetic and its market success.
“We are expanding both through the number of retail locations as well as through the number of product categories at the moment, through the introduction of bags and made-to-order jewelry pieces, which enable us to showcase the maison’s values, artisanship and aesthetic to our customers,” he explains.
Of the creative evolution he has already initiated, he says: “I love being able to bring a touch of luxury to casual looks and this is something I’ve been working on since I joined the company. I’ve introduced edgy biker boots, stylish sneakers and laid-back espadrilles to the René Caovilla footwear portfolio – of course, always using intricate crystals and embroideries to carry forward the quintessential Caovilla DNA.”
With such a distinguished heritage, one would imagine there would be significant pressure involved in carrying the weight of a family legacy and representing an entirely new generation. However, this simply seems to fuel Edoardo’s passion in moving the brand forward with a very measured approach.
When asked how he manages to strike a balance between maintaining the brand’s signatures and making it contemporarily appealing, he ays: “I think it’s a mix of fashion, culture, tradition, research of something new and innovative. Craftsmanship alone is not enough today. Making superb shoes is about more than mere technique. It demands artistry, virtuosity, skill and an interpretive talent that only the truly great master artisans possess.”
“Innovation and new technologies have become the cornerstone of the ongoing evolution of René Caovilla. Here, the manual artistry of embroidery happily coexists with leading-edge quality control, to guarantee that each pair of Caovilla shoes is a triumph of beauty and comfort,” he adds. “I am very honored to represent the third generation of the Caovilla family. I feel the responsibility of carrying over the remarkable heritage and traditions of this wonderful brand, which are inextricably linked to my family. I look forward to taking the René Caovilla brand to new successes in the future.”
Edoardo isn’t just passionate about leading the next generation of the brand, he is also deeply inspired by it and by the previous generations: “What makes Caovilla unique is the incomparable heritage of three generations and, for sure the, influence of Venice. When compared to other brands, Caovilla is the only one directly liaising to the beauty of Venice.”
Ultimately, he credits his father and the brand’s namesake with his, and the business’ continued success. “My father is my mentor. He taught me to appreciate and enhance/value beauty, to work hard and with passion to achieve goals, and also the importance of a company with family values, in order to recreate a second home at work,” he says. “Creativity, passion and excellence form the backbone of our brand, and have been the pillars that have enabled the Caovilla brand to flourish.” @renecaovilla
