Edoardo Caovilla took over the cre­ative reins of fam­ily-owned de­sign house and il­lus­tri­ous footwear la­bel René Caovilla in 2012, and is fo­cused on evolv­ing the brand’s DNA, while stay­ing true to its roots

IT’S DIF­FI­CULT TO IMAG­INE SOME­ONE seam­lessly tran­si­tion­ing from a ded­i­cated busi­ness mind­set to a more cre­ative one, but for Edoardo Caovilla, it’s in his blood.

“I had watched my grand­fa­ther and fa­ther work in the fam­ily busi­ness, and I hadn’t ini­tially planned to en­gage as a cre­ative,” Edoardo rec­ol­lects. “I stud­ied busi­ness and ex­pressed my­self in other ways for as long as I could. But I knew there would be a time when my fam­ily would ask me to stand at the helm of René Caovilla’s cre­ative stu­dio, and when it did, I de­cided to ded­i­cate my­self to learn­ing about the busi­ness from the ground up. I spent two years learn­ing the ba­sics with­out in­ter­rup­tion, be­cause the na­ture of this busi­ness re­quires an in-depth knowl­edge of the art of shoe­mak­ing.”

Ap­ply­ing the same gusto, Edoardo’s fo­cus is now on mov­ing the brand’s legacy for­ward, both in terms of en­hanc­ing its aes­thetic and its mar­ket suc­cess.

“We are ex­pand­ing both through the num­ber of re­tail lo­ca­tions as well as through the num­ber of prod­uct cat­e­gories at the mo­ment, through the in­tro­duc­tion of bags and made-to-or­der jew­elry pieces, which en­able us to show­case the mai­son’s values, ar­ti­san­ship and aes­thetic to our cus­tomers,” he ex­plains.

Of the cre­ative evo­lu­tion he has al­ready ini­ti­ated, he says: “I love be­ing able to bring a touch of lux­ury to ca­sual looks and this is some­thing I’ve been work­ing on since I joined the com­pany. I’ve in­tro­duced edgy biker boots, stylish sneak­ers and laid-back es­padrilles to the René Caovilla footwear port­fo­lio – of course, al­ways us­ing in­tri­cate crys­tals and em­broi­deries to carry for­ward the quin­tes­sen­tial Caovilla DNA.”

With such a dis­tin­guished her­itage, one would imag­ine there would be sig­nif­i­cant pres­sure in­volved in car­ry­ing the weight of a fam­ily legacy and rep­re­sent­ing an en­tirely new gen­er­a­tion. How­ever, this sim­ply seems to fuel Edoardo’s pas­sion in mov­ing the brand for­ward with a very mea­sured ap­proach.

When asked how he man­ages to strike a bal­ance be­tween main­tain­ing the brand’s sig­na­tures and mak­ing it con­tem­porar­ily ap­peal­ing, he ays: “I think it’s a mix of fash­ion, cul­ture, tra­di­tion, re­search of some­thing new and in­no­va­tive. Crafts­man­ship alone is not enough to­day. Mak­ing su­perb shoes is about more than mere tech­nique. It de­mands artistry, vir­tu­os­ity, skill and an in­ter­pre­tive tal­ent that only the truly great master ar­ti­sans pos­sess.”

“In­no­va­tion and new tech­nolo­gies have be­come the cor­ner­stone of the on­go­ing evo­lu­tion of René Caovilla. I feel the re­spon­si­bil­ity of car­ry­ing over the re­mark­able her­itage and tra­di­tions of this won­der­ful brand, which are in­ex­tri­ca­bly linked to my fam­ily. I look for­ward to tak­ing the René Caovilla brand to new suc­cesses in the fu­ture.”

Edoardo isn’t just pas­sion­ate about lead­ing the next gen­er­a­tion of the brand, he is also deeply in­spired by it and by the pre­vi­ous gen­er­a­tions: “What makes Caovilla unique is the in­com­pa­ra­ble her­itage of three gen­er­a­tions and, for sure the, in­flu­ence of Venice. When com­pared to other brands, Caovilla is the only one di­rectly li­ais­ing to the beauty of Venice.”

Ul­ti­mately, he cred­its his fa­ther and the brand’s name­sake with his, and the busi­ness’ con­tin­ued suc­cess. “My fa­ther is my men­tor. He taught me to ap­pre­ci­ate and en­hance/value beauty, to work hard and with pas­sion to achieve goals, and also the im­por­tance of a com­pany with fam­ily values, in or­der to recre­ate a se­cond home at work,” he says. “Cre­ativ­ity, pas­sion and ex­cel­lence form the back­bone of our brand, and have been the pil­lars that have en­abled the Caovilla brand to flour­ish.” @renecaovilla
