hile light therapy and ultrasonic vibrations are the stuff of scientific expirment, that’s exactly what you can try at your next facial. The Heavenly Spa at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort And Spa provides sophisticated biotech facials from Elemis that use vibrations and micro currents to make your skin shine. While not entirely convinced on the light therapy, (it’s all very Star Wars to us), we are eager to give it a go.

We test out the sonic skin resurfacing facial, a treatment that is meant to treat blemishes, even out skin tone and reduce scarring. Our therapist explains the facial will use two different technologies – ultrasonic vibrations and light therapy – to draw out impurities and boost collagen for firm, plump skin.

After a quick cleanse, a thin vibrating wand is spread along our skin to help slough off dead skin and clear out the pores. While the machine whines loudly, the procedure doesn’t hurt in the slightest. In fact, the exfoliation made our skin feel brand new. Next there was a gentle steam and extraction, which, while uncomfortable in parts, was necessary for our acne-prone skin.

Then the most relaxing portion of the treatment began, first with an application of a thick, cooling mask and subsequent scalp massage. Once that was peeled off, it was time for the light therapy. Using another wand, our skin was treated with a red light (meant to boost collagen production) and then a blue light (to get rid of any bacteria on the skin and soothe our skin). Again, it didn’t hurt.

While we’re not quite certain how much benefit shining lights on to your skin can have, we came out of the spa with smooth, glowing skin. Our face looked even better the next day and remained touchably soft. It seems light therapy may be a bright idea after all.
