What's On (Abu Dhabi)

My Abu Dhabi The Capital List’s Jonny McCarthy knows more about the city’s nightlife than most. Here’s where he heads on a night out

When I have guests in town, Ray’s Bar [1] at Jumeirah Etihad Towers never fails to impress. It’s on the 63rd floor and the views are unrivalled. If it’s a late night you’re after then visit MAD on Yas Island [2]. It always has a great line-up – they’ve recently had the likes of Lil John, Nelly and Jay Sean perform there. It’s the biggest club in the UAE, the staff are friendly and the sound system and light projections are something to behold. Iris on Yas Island [3] caters more for fans of house music and has held some fantastic alfresco partying on Yas Marina. Head here on a Wednesday for Ladies’ Night – it’s one of the best in the city. One of my favourite monthly events is Boogie Box [4]– a techno night that has a cult following in the city. It’s been running for six years and takes place at various locations including Yas Beach. The awardwinning Laughter Factory [5] live comedy nights take place at the Park Rotana and are a must – these guys have been bringing some of the best comedians to the UAE for 20 years. Last month they had South African comic Barry Hilton – he's huge. Chalkie’s Quiz Night at the Blu Sky Bar [6] is a guilty pleasure for me. I love a quiz, but always struggle with anything outside of the sports and music categories. Blu Sky Bar has one of the only jukeboxes in the city, so that’s a plus point once the quiz ends. My ‘hidden gem’ in the city is the Captain’s Arms [7], a venue that’s been around almost forever. Fantastic service and a traditional pub menu. The place reminds me of being back at home in Manchester, sitting out late on long summer nights talking to friends.
