She’s a record-breaking success, and has had a tumultuous career since breaking onto the music scene in 1994. Here are a few of the highs and lows of Ms Lauryn Hill…
FEBRUARY 26
HIGH: The Fugees were signed in 1994, releasing their first album, Blunted on Reality, which peaked at 62 on the Billboard R&B charts.
HIGH: The next album,
The Score hit number one, in 1996, selling 17 million copies worldwide.
LOW: In 1997, The Fugees broke up.
HIGH: Hill branched out from the group, releasing her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, to critical acclaim. The album saw her collaborate with Carlos Santana, Mary J Blige, John Legend and D’Angelo.
HIGH: In 1999, Hill was nominated for a whopping 10 Grammys. She won five of the 10 – a record for the most awards won by a woman.
LOW: In 2000, she chose to drop out of the public eye, turning down acting roles in Charlie’s Angels, The Bourne Identity and The Matrix franchise.
HIGH: She came back onto the music scene in 2001, with a concert and album titled MTV Unplugged No 2.0 which debuted at number three on Billboard.
HIGH: In 2004, The Fugees reunited to perform at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party and were celebrated globally. The band subsequently went on a European tour in 2005.
LOW: In April, 2009, Hill was scheduled for a 10-day tour of music festivals in Europe, but during the second concert, she passed out on stage – leaving the performance and cancelling the rest of her tour.
HIGH: She’s since continued touring and performing at festivals ,including Coachella in 2011, New Orleans Jazz Fest and she toured with rapper Nas in 2012.
