Movie society returns
The Scene Club is back for a new season of independent movies
Dubai’s indie film society The Scene Club is hoping to welcome an Oscar-winner for its first film of the autumn.
The film club has invited acclaimed actor JK Simmons to attend a showing of Whiplash, in which he played a tyrannical music teacher opposite a bullied pupil played by Miles Teller.
“He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar last year for Whiplash so he’s really hot,” explains Nayla Al Khaja, founder of The Scene Club and the UAE’s first female film producer.
Other titles coming up include A Thousand Times Good Night, with Juliette Binoche as a war photographer, Chineselanguage drama Wolf Totem, and Indian movie Margarita, With A Straw.
In May The Scene Club closed its season with comedy What We Do In The Shadows and a Q&A with its star Jonathan Brugh. Showings used to be free, but this season an unconfirmed membership fee has been introduced, details of which are yet to be confirmed.
