Expect the A to Z of musical genres from string quartet Kronos

-

Kronos, the Grammy Award-winning string quartet, will play two free concerts in Abu Dhabi this month, drawing on a vast array of influences of global music. Based in San Francisco, the group comprises David Harrington and John Sherba on violins, Hank Dutt on viola and Sunny Yang on the cello. David Harrington: When Kronos started playing in 1973 I had no idea we would still be playing today. I was just hoping we would last a week! DH: In the past 42 years Kronos has commissioned about 900 new pieces. All the music we will bring to Abu Dhabi has been written for us or arranged for us by people all over the world. Fodé Lassana Diabaté from Mali will be joining us and he’s written a wonderful piece for Kronos. DH: It seems to me that music is almost infinite in its possibilities. It’s so much fun to play with people from different backgrounds, religions and cultures. DH: Virtually every composer has said that the sound of the string quartet is one of the most intimate sounds they know. I love the fact that our music can go from being very soft to incredibly loud and lots of places in between. DH: Keep your ears open and listen to as much as you can. There is always something that will resonate – you just need to find what it is. September 16 and 17
