The tale of the battle of the sexes lands in Dubai
See an adaptation of Venus In Fur this month
Local theatre group H72 Productions return this month with a production of the classic play Venus In Fur. Based on Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 19th century novel
Venus In Furs, and American playwright Davies Ives’ 2010 Broadway play version, it’s a story exploring the balance of power between a playwright and a young actress.
Set in New York, Thomas Novacheck is a middle-aged director struggling to cast the lead role in his new play and frustrated with inadequate aspiring actors auditioning. As he prepares to pack up for the day, in steps Vanda Jordan, a young actress determined to land the part. The pair become entangled in a game of cat and mouse as they verbally dance around each other in a darkly comic performance. Ives’ Venus In Fur earned several accolades including a Best Play nomination at the Tony Awards in 2012.
The 90-minute no-intermission show stars actor Osan Aboubakr - who’s appeared in Almost Maine, The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue, Red, The Mousetrap and The Crucible - alongside budding actor Farzana Palathingal. At the helm of Venus is director Juliska Szik, who has previously directed a performance of Euripides’ Medea. September 7 to 15
