Hollywood calling

WKND - - Points Of View -

The article on Deepika Padukone’s fledgling Hollywood career hit the nail on the head ( Queen Dee flies West, Mar 11). As much as I want to hope Deepika does as well as Priyanka Chopra, the differences in PR machinery on both sides is quite obvious. Priyanka’s team makes sure her every move is known, making her the talk of the town, whereas Deepika’s is more timid. Priyanka is everywhere, thanks to her show, Quantico, appearances on popular talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, and even an appearance at the Academy Awards. Deepika has done well for herself so far, cementing her position in Bollywood with a string of hits and earning herself a spot with respected stars in her new Hollywood movie. Time will tell where she goes from here.

On a side note, it sure is a matter of pride to see so many of our stars join the Hollywood bandwagon, and to be embraced so well into the fold. It makes the art of cinema a truly global one. As the inimitable Alejandro Iñárritu so aptly puts it, “Cinema is universal; beyond flags, and borders and passports.”
