After watching Samsung’s ad for the Galaxy S7 Edge, all I could think was ‘ this better not disappoint me when I get my hands on it!’. And, boy, disappoint me it did not.

Samsung more than validated the hype over their new flagship, arguably, the best in their Galaxy range. For starters, you’ve got that lovely double- edged design, giving a nice sleek bezel to complement the S7 Edge’s crisp and bright Super Amoled screen. Speaking of edges, they’re much more useful now compared to its predecessor — you can now choose the apps you want and do a lot more with your contacts, plus some valueadded stuff like seeing the storage you have left or being able to measure something with a ruler.

A key talking point here is its camera, a 12MP shooter that boasts a professional- grade dual pixel sensor — the first in a smartphone. It works great even at night or low- light conditions. It’s also IP68rated, meaning it is dust- and water- resistant up to 1.5 metres and 30 minutes. So go ahead and take it with you into the pool next time.

Samsung also put a premium on gaming this time. There’s a function called Game Launcher, which is basically a folder that manages all your games and lets you disable keys, shut down alerts or record yourself while you’re playing so you have that hard- to- beat- enemy all to yourself.

Battery life has been improved as well, and barring some heavy usage such as gaming and videos, it should give you a day of power. The fingerprint scanner is back, although there are times it didn’t read my finger the first time I scanned it. I noticed some lags as well, but this might have to do with the expandable memory slot; remember, a higher- performance SD card will help you take away those stutters as it can be read more efficiently by the device.

AND SO...

Samsung’s created a nifty monster here, and the Galaxy S7 Edge could be among the top — if not the top — smartphones right now. However, you’ll have to shell out quite a lot to experience all of these and even more — one of its few rough edges.
