We all know that the fit­ness in­dus­try is boom­ing th­ese days. More peo­ple than ever be­fore are turn­ing to gyms and healthy di­ets, and while they all have their mo­ti­va­tions for do­ing so, few have a story quite like Elissa Good­man. Like so many of us, Los An­ge­les- based Elissa al­ways wanted the fast life of a suc­cess­ful busi­nessper­son. Her web­site talks about work­ing long hours at a stress­ful job, fu­elling her­self with caf­feine and ex­pen­sive din­ners out­side. Like many of us, Elissa be­lieved she was go­ing to con­quer the world. It was sud­denly, out of the blue, at the age of 32, that she felt the dreaded lump, and was di­ag­nosed with Hodgkin’s Lym­phoma, a can­cer that starts in the white blood cells. As her life was fall­ing apart, she re­alised her ex­ces­sive life­style and un­healthy habits must have con­trib­uted to her cur­rent di­ag­no­sis. “I was taught that suc­cess in my pro­fes­sional life trumped any­thing else,” ex­plains Elissa, when asked about her old life­style. “It’s crazy that we work so hard, give ev­ery­thing we have to our ca­reers and burn our­selves out, but do not invest in the great­est gift that we have — our health!
