My daugh­ter flew the nest nearly twenty years ago and a decade later, my lit­tle boy fol­lowed her, cre­at­ing a vac­uum in our lives ( Af­ter the kids have flown, Sept 23). Once kids come into our lives, being a par­ent be­comes our sig­nif­i­cant iden­tity. They be­come our cen­tre of at­ten­tion, fo­cus and an ultimate source of joy. But when they are fi­nally ready to fly the coop, the tran­si­tion be­comes too hard for par­ents to bear.

Af­ter read­ing about those in the ar­ti­cle, I am con­sid­er­ing the art of self- dis­cov­ery. How­ever, I will al­ways await my kids’ vis­its as their very pres­ence acts as a pick- me- up.
