A ‘ no- makeup’ primer

ometime in the early 90s, Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla appeared in a Lux soap TVC. She was shown getting into a bathtub to have a “luxurious” soak- in, and then soaping herself with — you guessed it! — a bar of Lux. Something stood out in that TVC. In an era when Bollywood was famously known for its overly- made- up looks ( in films, even if the actress has just rolled out of bed, she’d be wearing red lipstick, silver eye shadow etc), Juhi looked like she was actually going in for a bath: she had no makeup on. I remember reading a report soon after where makeup artist Mickey Contractor spoke about how much time he spent on perfecting the makeup for the TVC just so it looked like Juhi had no makeup on. Creating the no- makeup look, using a bunch of makeup, takes more time than it would for regular — or obvious — makeup. These days, the look Juhi sported back then is quite the rage. So this week, we thought we’d give you a tutorial: makeup for no- makeup.
