When the mag launched in 1989, the way to es­ti­mate your max­i­mum m heart rate was to sub­tract your age from 220. The team be­hind the mag wanted you to know that they’d help you achieve your ath­letic po­ten­tial, so they in­cor­po­rated ‘220’ into the ti­tle to re­flectf that. The method for find­ing your max heart rate may have changed, but the mag’s prom­ise re­mains the same.
