1
Prepare for the elements. Even though it’s in July/ Aug, mountain weather can be unpredictable so bring everything, including a neoprene hat!
2
It’s energysapping work climbing these mountains, so gain experience before the race. I’d suggest a 11-28 ratio on the back unless you’re a real spinner, then a 30 or even 32.
3
Pacing is everything. While a 118km bike may not seem far for many, the last climb exceeds 1km with no downhills, and then you’re running at altitude.
4
Nutrition’s key; if you rely on their fuelling, use them in training. Use the special needs drop-off at Valbonnais for your own nutrition.
5
Even when it’s cold you’ll sweat climbing those mountains, so keep hydrated and with enough supplies for the final climb and run.
