220 Triathlon

FROM THE GUEST EDITOR...

- DAVE SCOTT

Hey there, and welcome to the Kona anniversary issue of 220 Triathlon! I’m honoured to guest edit this celebratory edition. My first experience in the Hawaii Ironman was in 1980. Back then we were the pioneers in a strange new sport. Training, gear, nutrition… we figured it all out as we went. It was quite the adventure! From the very beginning I was determined to race the event… Not just survive it. My strategy paid off because I won in Kona six times, and then had the privilege of coaching some of its finest champions, including Chrissie Wellington and Craig Alexander, along with thousands of dedicated age-groupers. Always a teacher at heart, I consider myself very fortunate to have had a lifelong career doing what I love. Today the sport has grown into a global phenomenon, with literally thousands of events to choose from, large and small. Nonetheless, to this very day, the magic of racing in Kona has never diminished. The winds, heat and lava of Hawaii’s Big Island helped to define my career, and it remains the ultimate proving ground for triathletes worldwide. So whether you’re hoping to test yourself along the Queen K one day, or have a different race targeted for 2019, in this issue we’ll present our best training tips while celebrating 40 years of the most coveted triathlon of all: the Hawaii Ironman. Train hard, race fast and I hope you enjoy the issue!
