LONGHAUL

£2.99 A savoury gel for Ironman?

-

So many of us consume rice cakes on long sessions, so it’s surprising that these are the first savoury gels we’ve ever tasted. Actually, they’re more baby food than gel and, when not moving, aren’t great. But during long rides of over two or three hours – and we’d suggest definitely during the Ironman bike leg – they’re impressive, providing a welcome break from sweet energy products. The Turmeric Chicken’s 170cals from 14.3g carbs, 9.6g fat and 7.8g protein, so not a bad split, especially at the lower intensity of the bike. Butternut squash and basmati rice are the key slow-releasing carb sources, while honey adds a short, sharp hit. Various vitamins and antioxidants are delivered from the onions, carrots and coconut flesh. It’s also organic, gluten-free and comes in a sweet potato and sesame flavour. longhaulendurance.com
