SPIUK TRIENNA
€99.90 Tri bikes shoes developed with Mario Mola
According to the Spanish sports apparel manufacturers, Spiuk, these triathlon and duathlon shoes were developed in conjunction with Mario Mola, the 2017 and 2018 ITU world champion and two-time Olympian. It’s a world-class palmares and one he’d struggled to have unleashed with the sizing issues we endured with the Triennas. This tester is a UK10.5. But these were incredibly tight – to begin with, uncomfortably so. This eased slightly through testing but either check in person or go at least half-a-size larger than normal.
And that’s a shame as these are a strong pair of affordable (about £90) tri bike shoes shoes that would’ve punched above their fiscal weight. Power transfer between foot and bike is proficient thanks to the fibreglass and nylon composition. On the stiffness scale, it’s seven out of 10 with 10 being the stiffest and for out-and-out racers. Arguably, for most age-group triathletes, the extra comfort offered by a lower stiffness rating is preferred.
Ventilation channels in the sole are large enough to offer a modicum of cooling but not so large to consume puddles. They’re also angled to provide further defence from water ingress. Internal padding offers comfort without becoming saturated, especially if racing barefoot, while the reverse strap is a solid option to ride effortlessly away from T2. It’s also at a length that you don’t need to crudely cut back that, aesthetically, is appreciated. Loops at the heel and inside edge provide further transition speed.
