Big ticket refurbishments, such as updating or installing a new kitchen, require plenty of forethought. Sticking to a budget, planning the layout and focusing on finish will pay dividends.

Make a plan

A successful kitchen scheme depends on a combination of form and function. If starting from scratch, think about how you’ll use the space. ‘Look at your current kitchen and make notes on what you love and what you don’t,’ says Magnet’s head of merchandising Hayley Simmons. ‘Map your journey through the kitchen, taking into account lighting, plug sockets and appliance placement. Bear in mind that the traditional working triangle between worktop, sink and fridge is becoming much less regimented. Homeowners are increasingly confident in planning more unusual layouts with sociability and food preparation the priority.’ Another key element is budget. Hayley suggests

The finish line

Once the layout of your kitchen has been finalised, consider its look. Bold colour mixing is on trend. Try midnight-hued cabinets with neutral shades to liven up your kitchen. Darker tones on base units will anchor a bold injection of colour. Mixing two tones works well and creates a modern finish, but stick to two or three colours at most to ensure a cohesive look.

Also bear in mind that lighting should be an integral part of your design. Layering helps to accentuate different aspects for different occasions, so try to include both task and ambient options, from spotlights to plinth lighting.

Finally, whatever your total budget, accessories can lift a kitchen from ordinary to standout. ‘Source statement handles to enhance cabinetry,’ suggests Hayley. ‘Using a variety of styles at once can work, but stick to the same finish.’
