steel fencing

To create a style statement in their outdoor space, Ben Stokes and Sophie Charlesworth opted for a fence made from heavyduty galvanised corrugated steel. Secure, high enough for privacy and offering an alternative to traditional designs, this simple update has transformed their garden. Steel is a material that is robust, aesthetically appealing and ideal for creating a modern, industrial look. Easier to maintain than wood, this cost-effective option can be installed vertically or horizontally. Rugged materials, such as corrugated steel, are a great way to introduce texture and provide the perfect backdrop for gravel, salvaged wood, metal furniture and terracotta tableware.

paint ed furniture

A handsome antique French bed has been painted a vibrant emerald green, with carved details picked out in gold, to create a striking centrepiece against the neutral tones of Annie Sloan and David Manuel’s bedroom. Painted furniture is an essential element in a country-style interior – a technique used for centuries to transform less-than-perfect pieces. The bed has been given an easily achievable antique effect, which mimics an aged patina. On surfaces that have not previously been painted, always apply a primer before the main colour to ensure a good finish. On a plain piece of furniture, consider adding some stencilling or freehand embellishments as attractive highlights.

floating bar

The Kynochs have created an ingenious handcrafted floating bar suspended from the ceiling by steel chains and secured with inconspicuous brackets. A plank of rough-hewn wood cut to size creates the perfect surface. This clever idea can be used for many types of shelf and a good carpenter should be able to recreate this design for you, perhaps adding your own twist with gold or brass chains or a heavy-duty steel cable. The shelf looks particularly effective hung against a dramatic petrol blue panelled wall, while the neon sign injects a pop of colour and personality. Authentic wall-mounted optics and a pair of industrial metal bar stools complete the look.
