The scheme that has inspired us this month
Barcelona bursts with a playful energy fuelled by colour, culture and world-class design. If you are heading there for a long winter weekend, the Cotton House Hotel is a worthy place to retreat to. Situated in a magnificent 19th-century neoclassical building that was once home to the local cotton guild, the hotel is a favourite with lovers of glamorous design.
The Cotton House Hotel’s masterful look was overseen by Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-violán, who has paid homage to the property’s original elegance, while updating it with a stunning mix of contemporary art and vivid colour schemes.
Most glorious of all the hotel’s spaces is its decadently styled library, a spot that is perfect for quiet contemplation over an espresso or mid-afternoon martini. The exquisite marquetry floors, opulent carved ceiling and towering doors are all original 19thcentury features from when the room was used as a social club for guild members. Lázaro brought in the striking, cloud-like ceiling pendant and turquoise leather lounge chairs, and arranged specially made custom rugs that tie the space together. The postbox-red canvas hanging above the black mantelpiece provides a daring splash of colour and came from Lázaro’s private art collection.
After a hectic day of sightseeing around Barcelona, make your way back to the hotel and rest your head in one of its lavish bedrooms, named after fabrics such as damask and taffeta, which reflect the property’s proud textiles trade heritage.
